We WILL be having Open Fencing Wednesday night at 6 p.m. for those still in Springfield this Thanksgiving eve. (this means you Gena!)
Coach Hughes got word from his doctor that he has a torn meniscus, and is scheduled to meet with an orthopedic specialist the first week of December. He has been grumbling about this all day because it means no fencing (or running or biking) yet. However, he will still be able to do bladework drills in the meantime....

Beginner Foil Tourney - Nov. 18th STL
3 SFC members traveled to St. Louis on Sunday, Nov. 18th to compete in a Beginner Foil Tournament. This was a first tournament for fencers Gantt Nicholson and Conner York. Foilist Hannah Elston had recently competed in Peoria. Each of the three SFC fencers competed in a separate category, so they did not have to face each other.
After a slight delay getting started, the tourney got underway. Hannah faced off against all the other women fencers; Gantt was in the largest group, fencing in a pool of 23 total 13 and older men fencers; and Conner faced off against 6 other Youth, 12 and under, foilists. The official results from this tournament are not yet posted, but here is how it looks according to Coach Hughes' notes...
Gantt finished in 7th place! Great result for his first competition ... and in his early pools, he actually beat the young man who won 1st place!
Conner won his first medal this day, finishing in 3rd place in his category! He did very well, especially considering he was one of the youngest competitors.
Hannah had a great day, and won 1st place in the women's category! She fenced very well, and her ability to read her opponents and strategize accordingly was fabulous. We anticipate this will be the first of many trophies for this young lady!
Congrats to these SFC Fencers!
Conner receives his 3rd place medal!!!!
Hannah's 1st Place Trophy!!!!
Hannah, Conner, & Gantt w/ Coach Hughes in the back....
I just received word that Wednesday Night Potluck is BBQ ribs!!!! Remember, everyone is invited & bring a dish to pass. Potluck at 5:30 ~ 6:45ish, and Open Fencing starts at ~7:00....
