SFC wins Third Place this year!!

The Springfield Fencing Club Team consisting of Jonnell Baskett, Freddie Baskett, and Eric Mayland won 3rd Place in the Gateway Annual Team Competition on Sunday, March 2nd. This is the third year in a row the SFC has competed in this competition, and this is the highest ranking Team we have sent. CONGRATULATIONS Jonnell, Freddie, & Eric!!!!

3 SFC Foilists in Champaign

3 Springfield Fencing Club foilists competed in the Friday Night Foil Tourney at The Point in Champaign on February 15th.  Quick results:  Jay Lovelace - 3rd AND earned his E2008 rating; Joanne Liu - 9th; Eric Mayland - 18th.

Change in the Schedule

Beginning this Wednesday, the Church's Lenten schedule kicks in, and St. Paul's will be using the Great Hall on Wednesday evenings for Lenten Programs. Therefore, just like last year, we will be having Open Fencing on Tuesday nights at 6 p.m., starting this week and continuing until Easter. See you on Tuesdays!!

Coach Hughes had his knee surgery successfully on Friday, Jan 11th, almost 3 months exactly after his injury at work.  The doc said the damage was a little more than he thought from looking at the MRI.  Ended up scraping away a few "fragments" and cutting out about 5% of the meniscus in the right knee.  Coach started Physical Therapy this week and the prognosis is he will be able to bicycle again, run (although no marathons probably), and walk.  No one will hazard a guess about fencing though... they say that needs to be assessed after a goodly period of pt and recuperation....  He is not back at work yet either, so, day by day.  He does hope to get back to St. Paul's on Saturday to see everyone and go out for lunch!

Chicago Lakeshore Fencers Club Open

At last, Jay earned his "E" ranking at the Chicago Lakeshore Fencers Club Open in Epee!!! He finished 8 of 17 in the B1 rated tourney. At the end of the day, he had bested 1 E, 4 D, and 2 C epee-ists! Anyone who has ever faced Jay on the piste knows this ranking is long overdue. Congratulations Jay!!!!

FOIL RESULTS

3 SFC members competed in the Open Foil competion as well. Eric Mayland came in 21st, Devlin Hanners came in 26th (welcome back Devlin!!), and Flynn Hanners came in 27th. The Foil tourney was made up of 31 foilists from Illinois and Wisconsin. Strong field, with 1 B, 3 C, 9 D and 8 E fencers!! Congratulations to all 3 of these gents!!
