During Lent, we will be meeting on Tuesday nights, from 6 - 7:30 p.m. for Open Fencing. I will also be conducting Make-up Foil lessons (Beginner 1 and Intermediate) on Tuedays upon request. St. Paul's is holding Lenten programs in the Great Hall for the next 6 weeks on Wednesday eves, andTuesdays seemed the best night for those who compete on the weekends. Gives the older knees of us senior citizens a chance to recoup!
Because of scheduling issues, we have not been able to meet for a week and a half now! Seems like a month! I do plan to get a photo of the award winners from the St. Louis tourney with trophies for posting. Hopefully tomorrow, Saturday!
No tournaments this weekend. The following week is the St. Louis Mixed Team Foil Tourney on sunday the 4th. We have 1 and 2/3s teams preregistered. Team one is Joanne, Flynn, and Kev. Team two is Jay, Eric, and... hmmm, they need a woman fencer! Any lady interested in competing, this is a great time, and since it is a team event, you don't have to fence against other members of your team. Call me or Jay if you are interested. (I plan to drag Grace along, even though she doesn't want to compete)

The following Press Release was published in the SJ-R Arts&Entertainment Section on Feb. 15, 2007...
Swordplay-staging workshop given Sunday
A free workshop to
teach the basics of swordplay and how to make it look real on stage
will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Hoogland Center for the
Arts, 420 S. Sixth St.
The class will be taught by Kevin Hughes, a master sergeant with the
Illinois State Police and former captain of the Northern Illinois
University fencing team. The Springfield Ballet Company, Springfield
Municipal Opera and Springfield Fencing Club are sponsoring the event.
Equipment will be provided.
Classes are open to anyone 10 years or older, but a parent must accompany participants younger than 16.
There is room for 30 participants, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
This workshop was canceled as only 2 people pre-registered... We will try again, but offer it as an evening workshop for 2 or 3 weeks in a row... Hopefully the Springfield Arts Community will see the value of this, especially with sword-play being involved in the upcoming Muni Production of "Peter Pan" this summer, and the Springfield Ballet Company's production of "Romeo&Juliet" in the next season....
