North - Freddie Baskett headed north to Chicago for the Illinois Junior Olympics Qualifier on Sunday, held at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Freddie competed in the Men's Cadet (17 & under) Foil category. 16 Illinois foilists were present for this competition. Three pools were formed, and there were 6 in Freddie's. A total of 5 rated fencers (1 D & 4 Es) were on the strips. In his pools, Freddie went 2 - 3, which ranked him 9th overall going into Direct Eliminations (DE). First round of DEs, Freddie faced off a TALL talented fencer from University of Illinois Lab High School (Paul Weichselbaum) who was ranked 8th. This bout was finished within the first three minute period, Freddie winning 15-7. This moved Freddie up to face the #1 ranked fencer, Yusuf Sobh (D2007), from The Point of Champaign. (Congratulations to Mr. Sobh for winning #1 in this competition!) Freddie lost 5-15, but had a very impressive bout. At the end of the day, Freddie ranked 6th overall. CONGRATULATIONS!!! The USFA will post the National Points Rankings on Wednesday, at which time we'll update this posting to reflect where Freddie stands nationally.
South - Joanne Lui, Jay Lovelace, and Flynn Hanners drove south to St. Louis on Sunday to compete in the St. Louis Regional Open Foil Competition, held at the St. Louis Pharmacy College. So far, all we know for sure are the final rankings from the day (still waiting for the breakdown on askFRED.net). But, we are thrilled to announce that Joanne won FIRST Place, Jay came in SECOND, and Flynn came in EIGHTH!!! We'll post more info on this as it becomes available. and so, to our southern foilists - CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I just felt the need to comment on this, considering how incredibly absurd one statement is.
I'm a friend of Paul, and I know that he only started fencing a week or so before this tournament. Therefore, hardly in the talented category.
I also know that both of these young men fenced in the remenyik last weekend.
They fenced in pools, Mr. Weichselbaum winning 5-1, which would in turn imply a rebalancing of this "talent" scale. He also, when describing the pools after the fact, explained that the point was scored against was due to "squirmy counterattacking".
